The nature of the water causes the inhabitation of the Salzhaff by animals living in the sea, which are tolerating larger fluctuations of the salt content. Differing from the more eastern areas of the Baltic here are marine species predominating. Freshwater species are rarely.
The lagoon Salzhaff as a shallow water is very well flushed by sunlight (the averagely depth is around 4 meters).

A wide biodiversity of macroalgas and the spacious salt meadows offer protection, food and the possibility of reproduction to a wide spectrum of snails, mussels, cancers and fishes. The flora of the banks is determinated by very tough species.

The salty surroundings (soil, air) require the ability to store water (succulence) of the plants. Attracted by the lot of kinds of small animals in the area of the shallow Salzhaff and its dune- and salt meadow areas, here live many kinds of waterbirds and waders. But also raptors find its nutriment and provide an unforgettable experience.
