The Salzhaff belongs to the western Baltic Sea and formed about 7000 years ago lonked to the Litorina-Transgression. This flooding caused the slowly rising sea-level and filled up valleys and hollows.

Only the higher elevations rested seen as peninsulas (Wustrow, Boiensdorfer Werder). But the evolution of the coasts of the Salzhaff wasn´t finished yet by this. Especially the wind persistent alters the coasts with stormfloods or windwatts. In the 80ies "Kieler Ort" get detached from the peninsula Wustrow and is now an island.
The coastal area of the Boiensdorfer Werder is subject to persistant changes too. These changes are especially typifieded by reduction, loss of coast.

Principally we differ reduction- and construction shorelines. Reduction shorelines are the wellknown steep rugged shores, from which the sea takes off material (stones, sand, clay). So stony beaches and heavy erratic blocks are typical for this shoreline type and show the former shoreline.
The finer materials get transported in the water and build up the construction shorelines. Here we have to differ two types of shore forms. The sand washed away from the destruction shore piles up here and grows dunes, better known as beaches. The finer substances (clay) only may deposit in bays without wind. This shoreline type is called saltmeadow, it is less known and protected.
